Removal of radioactive lightning rods

With the Act on Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety no. 36/2009 and 93/2012, radioactive lightning rods are prohibited for installation. By authorized institution - the Agency, it is adopted a provision on their removal in 2014, which was ordered to remove all radioactive lightning rods from the territory of Serbia, by May 2015.

Sources of radioactive lightning rod outputs elements to direct radiation, for years. It is unlikely that the materials from which they are made, will be damaged during this period, leading to the conclusion that the prevention of radioactivity or ionizing radiation can not be guaranteed.

Bearing in mind that the radioactive lightning installations in its composition contain a source of ionizing radiation of high activity (in Serbia mostly Europium 152, Cobalt 60, then Radium 226, Americium 241), the command is to for this type of procedure to engaged authorized legal entities which would execute removal in the prescribed manner, respecting all obligations of security, in aspects of radiation protection of professional persons, employees, and the environment.

Potential external exposures and risks associated with contamination and internal exposure to ionizing radiation Ra-226 and Am-241 are given in the figure below.

KVARK under this procedures, provides their customers: the dissasembly and removal of sources of ionizing radiation from radioactive lightning rods, packing of radioactive materials in the appropriate protective container , transport of radioactive materials and permanently storing it in the competent institution, with providing a document - confirmation of the stored material, issued to the generators of waste, the owner of lightning rod, or source of ionizing radiation.
